Extended Producer Responsibility

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes aim at ensuring that producers contribute financially to the costs of waste management, obliging them to take operational or financial responsibility for the end-of-life phase of their products. EPRs are also seen as an economic instrument to stimulate better product design and reduce waste management costs. In textiles, EPRs are one of the key policies to support the implementation of the obligation for EU Member States to separately collect textiles as of 2025, stemming from the Waste Framework Directive.

Timeline

Some EU Member States, such as France, the Netherlands and Italy, have already advanced their EPR schemes, while other countries rely on guidance from the Commission expected with the revision of the Waste Framework Directive at the beginning of July.
